Crazy, Busy, Wonderful Times

Well, things definitely aren't boring here on Condor Ave.

Sickness Descends
Mela and I were sick last week on Thursday and Friday, which was a little tough (pregnant + sick + looking after a toddler = exhaustion) but it was a good lesson in what it truly means to be a parent/grownup and not a self-centred kid anymore. I felt so bad for Mela (life is hard when you can't breath through your nose) that I didn't have time to feel sorry for myself.

Because she was feverish and miserable, it meant that Mela needed and got extra care (e.g. rocked to sleep when she kept waking up at night), so, like earlier in the week, I tried to look at it as a precious, rare chance to be together that will be gone before I know it.

A Haircut:
Determined not to let sickness get us down, I took Mela to get her first haircut on Friday and it went surprisingly well. It took a hilarious amount of distraction for about five seconds of cutting: I enticed her with duck-shaped cheese crackers while the assistant blew bubbles and the hairdresser madly tried to do some trimming without poking her in the eye with the scissors.

In the end, it's not the most even cut in the world but she looks much more presentable (Grammie's coming - better clean up!) and she can actually see the world now.

An Aunt & Uncle Arrive!
Chris's sister Lisa and her fiance Sam then arrived back in town on Friday and we've been having a great time ever since. Mela's been a trooper, with the cold and without much sleep at times, and very, very cute with her aunt and uncle.

We went to Toronto Island on Saturday and had a great time riding the ferry, biking around on a quadra-cycle and eating at the "Rectory Cafe."

Mela would probably tell you that the highlights were riding the ferry ("why does Momma keep saying "water" but never offering me my sippy cup??"), seeing lots of dogs ("EEEEEEEE"), drinking lemonade from a straw (tasty!) and getting a chance to do a bit of walking.

Speaking of which, walking continues to bring new developments and achievements every day. It's hard to tell who's more delighted (her or us) ... we all pretty much scream with excitement when she does a particularly long toddle.

Hanging with Aunt Lisa (i.e. I'll be friends with you if you share your cheese with me):

Nanny Update
In other news, we've had a radical change in our child care setup over the last couple of days, which has ultimately resulted in no more nanny. Long story but this means that I'm now going to be off all this week, taking care of my child. I'll probably have to work a bit longer in July than we'd planned because of it but a week at home with my little monkey isn't exactly something to be upset about.

And luckily, we're covered for the next two weeks after this (Chris's parents + trip to NC), and then Mela will start at a local day care. I look a tour on Friday and had a really positive impression. They have a great environment with lots of fun activities for the kids and I think Mela will actually get a lot out of it (compared to playing with same 4 toys in our living room every day).

And if she hates it, well, it's only for four weeks so it could be worse. AND, they will feed her an awesomely healthy lunch every day, which will take some stress off us since we won't have to try to come up with nutritious meal ideas at 10 pm every night (e.g tofu and broccoli again!).

That's about it for the update. One week until we see Grammie and Grandad and two weeks until we see Aunt Cathi and cousin Jenny!

Wary but cute:
