Nate is great and a visit from the teething demon

Nate is a marvel.

He is 11.5 months old and can "cruise" (walk holding onto things) everywhere. He took his first steps at my parents house last weekend (hooray!!) and actually just walked across the living room by holding onto Mela as she tried to run away from him.

It was maybe the funniest thing I've ever seen. (Mela didn't think it was so hilarious - she burst into tears.)

It's not that this is particularly advanced for his age (Mela took her first steps when she was just a few weeks older) but that he's learned to do this with very little attention from us. Granted, he does practice every second of the day (feels like the classic 10,000 hrs) but it's still a bit amazing.

It's felt like our sheer force of will helped Mela to walk and we're slightly surprised that a baby can just learn to do it on his own.

The key word there is "baby." It's mostly just surprising that this baby can walk. When Mela was a year, she was SO OLD, whereas Nate is clearly still a dear, precious, little baby.

Okay, maybe not "little" ... how 'bout dear, precious, chubby baby?

He can also talk now! I'm a real skeptic about the whole first word phenomenon ("What's that, sweetums? "Gaa gaa"? Oh, you just said, "Grandma!") but it's getting hard to deny. He clearly stands at the bottom of the stairs and bellows "UP!" He can also say "down" (as in, "Put me down, you useless wench!"), Dada (that one could've been a coincidence, needs to be replicated), and banana (his favourite fruit).

He can also kind of say "dog" and "ball" and make monkey noises. And like most kids this age, Peek-a-boo is huge.

Uh, it's not really peek-a-boo if I can still see you...
Maybe not that thrilling for others, but after living through the longggg wait for Mela to say anything other than Dada (when she was almost two!), it's refreshing.

It's also a little scary ... I'm not sure I want to hear exactly what he has to say.

Nate starts to teach himself to read:
Not much to report other than that ... the weeks here are flying by (two and a half weeks until the moving van arrives - gasp!).

Nate had his ultrasound yesterday (for a potentially stiff hip that was really just him being stubborn) and it was totally fine, as we expected. Still, it was a little terrifying to be a hospital room with your baby, watching someone run diagnostic equipment over his little body.

It was a little cool, though, to be back in a ultrasound room, where I used to look at images of him in my belly, with the real thing. How far we've come in a very short year ...

The best meal of Nate's life: straight beef!
The biggest concern here right now is that Mela turned into Mr. Hyde yesterday and I barely made it through 'til bedtime. We had to pull out the stops (calls to Grandma, water play, even lots of tv) and finally, I just had to sit on the couch and hold her. At least she's old enough now to tell me the cause: "Mama, Mela sore tooth!"

Ahhhh ...

Nice snuggle but the house is never going to get organized at this rate:
At least Nate's not teething right now (he's actually very happy these days, as long as he has some kind of ball) and it's happening before the move, right? Because if we have to go through this AND move across the country, I might give my children away.

I know grandparents who are accepting ...
